A Braid is a ler equivalent to a family. There were other family structures tried in early ler history, but by the early twenty-second century braids were the dominant form. Sometimes Klanh and braid are used interchangeably, but technically the braid is the particular arrangement of people in a given generation, while the Klanh is the continuous sequence of such generations with an unbroken sequence of insiblings.

There are four possible positions for children in a braid--Insibling(Toorh), the highest in social ranking; Elder Outsibling(Nerh), which is almost equal to a Toorh; Younger Outsibling(Thes); and Extra(Zerh), which is the lowest, though Thes is not far above it. (There are also Bastards, or Hifzers, but they are by definition outside of the braid.) These rankings stay with ler throughout their lives.

Insiblings, though they have different biological parents, are raised together, and are almost always within a year of each other in age. The outsiblings are five years younger.

An outsibling will leave the braid at maturity to marry into another braid as an afterparent.

One in five or six braids has an extra child, either a third pregnancy by one of the mothers, or a fraternal twin.
