The Void is an emotionally-detached mental state that Rand al'Thor can attain which helps him in combat or in seizing saidin. It was taught him by his adoptive father, Tam al'Thor, as "the flame and the void"--the flame to feed your emotions into until your mind becomes empty. Tam used it as an aid in archery.
